From idea to completion took several years...
It took many months to find the ideal site for the project. We found this on the island north western shore. On the site of the historic Glendale Rebellion of the 1800s.
We were wanting to design an idyllic bolthole that could boast uninterrupted views whatever the weather. We were looking for something unique that would complement the austere beauty of the island and offer a comfortable and luxurious retreat from the distractions of modern living.
The internal views are light-filled and airy. The colour scheme of the home stems from the surrounding landscape. The sea inspires the colour of the slates, and the blue, grey hues of sea and sky and the browns of earth and grass. There is a delightful atmosphere of lightness and refined grace. A sparse elegance that is the perfect place for reflection and rest.
We sourced proper natural materials. Our architects at Rhouse and ourselves were keen on keeping to a simple stripped back feel, matching the island in many ways. Our designers explained the ways that the larch would age, adding to the austere beauty.
It is a contemporary cabin built for fair weather and foul. There is no doubt that it is an isolated and dramatic space, landscape is beautiful yet brutal, sculpted by the extreme weather that shapes every aspect of life on the island. Large windows pull in all available light no matter how gloomy the weather conditions. The interiors sparkle with Scandinavian chic, the inside is bright no matter how gloomy the outside. It is all put together with an understated charm. Described by our early visitors as "luxury with rebellious agricultural roots" & "a croft re-interpreted for the 21st Century".
The project was completed in June of 2015.
